Does Walmart take plastic bags for recycling near me? ›

All the national grocery retailers (such as Kroger, Safeway, Target and Walmart) and many smaller retailers offer bag recycling collections in their stores. The bins are usually located near the front entrance. Use the Recycling Search to find a location near you — just enter your ZIP code.

In 2021, we began offering collection bins for plastic bags and films in our U.S. stores. Our program is designed to collect these materials and mix them into a bale with other recyclables. We contract with companies to pick up these bales for sorting and recycling.

Examples of non-recyclable plastics include bioplastics, composite plastic, plastic-coated wrapping paper and polycarbonate. Well known non-recyclable plastics include cling film and blister packaging.

Walmart stores in Maine, Vermont, New York, Connecticut and Colorado use paper bags for delivery orders, the company says. In New Jersey, Walmart uses reusable bags for delivery. In some of these states, Walmart stores did away with single-use bags as early as 2021, while others adopted the change more recently.

Look for the How2Recycle Store Drop-off label on flexible polyethylene-based plastics, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE, or #2 plastic) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE, or #4 plastic), including but not limited to: grocery and produce bags.

All plastic bags at Target's checkout lanes are made of a minimum of 40% recycled content. And as always, guests can recycle any single-use or reusable plastic bags they no longer need at our in-store recycling kiosks.

#6 – Polystyrene

Commonly referred to as 'styrofoam' this is the one kind of plastic that is NOT accepted at the Hebron Transfer Station.

Polyvinyl chloride (or PVC). It contains a toxic substance called nonylphenol, which does not prevent it from being used in a wide range of products, from door frames to credit cards to various construction materials. It is one of the most difficult plastics to recycle.

Waste management experts say the problem with plastic is that it is expensive to collect and sort. There are now thousands of different types of plastic, and none of them can be melted down together. Plastic also degrades after one or two uses.

"We can't return them, we can't do much with them." Now, a little more than a year later, Walmart has launched a pilot project to address the problem. It allows customers to pack up their unwanted reusable Walmart blue bags and ship them — at no charge — to a facility where they'll get a second life.

Plastic bags are currently not recyclable. Over the years, Ventura County and its partner cities have tried to ensure that any item with market value could be placed in the recycling containers for both businesses and residents. In the past, there has been a market for mixed film plastics, including plastic bags.
