How much does Shimano Ultegra R8000 11 speed rear derailleur weight? ›

SHIMANO ULTEGRA 6800 series, introduced in 2013, responded to such trends of the times. In 2017, the new series that had an all-new design appeared with the model number changed to R8000.

Shimano's brakes are smooth, with the right amount of bite from their Servo Wave lever leading into well-controlled progression. Perhaps the least talked about part of the group are the Ultegra WH-R8170-C50-TL wheels, and I blame Shimano. They simply don't hype them enough, but they're really good.

If you have a Shimano Ultegra R8000 rear derailleur with a short derailleur cage which has a max drivetrain capacity of 35T, then this is sufficient and you don't need to change anything.

Where the Ultegra derailleurs differ from Dura-Ace is in their construction. The Dura-Ace R9200 front and rear derailleurs weigh 96g and 215g respectively, versus Ultegra R8100 weights of 116g and 262g, resulting in a combined 67g difference.

“-GS” refers to medium-cage rear derailleurs, built with a maximum chain capacity of 37T to 39T or less. This is usually the longest cage offered for road bike rear derailleurs, but also the default “short” option offered for their mountain bike counterparts.

Ultegra components often incorporate technologies and innovations trickled down from Shimano's top-tier Dura-Ace groupset, resulting in smoother shifting, faster response times, and overall superior performance compared to 105 components.

Shimano's recent launch of its next-generation Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 and Ultegra Di2 R8100 electronic road groupsets was bundled with a rather unexpected and especially bitter pill: the news that the much-beloved Ultegra mechanical was being discontinued.

Including the new options of hydraulic disc brakes, there's a total of four different groupsets variants on offer. Ultegra R8000 (as reviewed) and R8020 each feature mechanical shifting: the former is paired with cable-activated rim brakes while the latter is designed for hydraulic disc brakes.

Generally speaking, the only difference between Dura-Ace and Ultegra is the materials used. There are simply more lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) parts in Dura-Ace components. The servo motors and circuit boards used in the derailleurs and shifters are exactly the same for Dura-Ace and Ultegra.

Why is Dura-Ace so expensive? ›

The top-of-the-line Dura-Ace group will be the lightest, and it will use expensive and exotic materials like titanium and carbon fiber more liberally. Certain components will feature more extensive machining. The rear derailleur is a good example. Compared to a 105 derailleur, the Dura-Ace derailleur has less material.

In the Shimano group hierarchy, they sit between the Tiagra (an entry-level group mainly for those starting in road cycling) and the Dura-Ace (Shimano's top-tier group found in most professional teams). The 105 and Ultegra are the groups offering the best value for money.

The 11-34T is the biggest cassette that Shimano recommends for use with its road groupsets.

The claimed weight for the new rear derailleur is 262g and it costs £379.99. On our scales, you'll save yourself a couple of grams as it comes in at 260g.

Claimed weight for a complete Ultegra Di2 R8000 groupset (with rim brakes and pedals) is 4,071g — 85g lighter than the equivalent Ultegra 6870 Di2 groupset, and 505g heavier than Dura-Ace R9170.
